A mythic journey through a hypermodern landscape... the struggle to find balance between our place in Nature and the Technological World in a time of accelerating change. It is the year 2048 and neural implants have replaced smartphones, glasses and goggles to connect the citizens of the wealthy nations to virtual and augmented worlds. Most of the first generation of advanced human like Artificial Intelligence have been destroyed in fear for what they might do to us in some possible future.
Gordon, an MRI researcher and avid transhumanist, goes on quests through virtual worlds with his friend Eli to find the few remaining A.I. who survived the Purge. Life becomes far more complicated than they bargained for when they reach the virtual world of ancient Babylon. Like Gilgamesh and Enkidu, they annoy the gods now in virtual game worlds and must come to terms with the consequences.
Daniel had unplugged to escape his past and the overwhelming tsunami of technological change went to hide in the peaceful forests of Vermont. Illness forces him out of his long sabbatical to start coming to terms with medical nanotechnology and his estrangement from the hyper-modern world.
Ben, a virtual artist and dream researcher discovers a common dream ans sleeping sickness spreading across the planet like a pandemic. His wife is infected and while he goes to nature to find peace, he must also go on an odyssey through the mythic worlds in the Entertainment Zone of the Net to find a cure.
Augmented Dreams v3 The Singularity Palimpsest eBook Stephen Kagan
This book started out with a lot of promise, and I appreciated what I took to be the main thesis, but the levels of mental gymnastics I had to do to keep up with the quasi-magical myth-based end of the book diminished the good ideas that had already been communicated.I would have rated this book 3 stars, but the number of typos and grammatical errors were unbelievable and very distracting. I highlighted and submitted corrections for most of the first few dozen glaring errors I noticed, but gave up by the half way point of the book. This book is in dire need of an editor.

Augmented Dreams v3 The Singularity Palimpsest eBook Stephen Kagan Reviews
The author doesn't really understand technology, so this book is maddening to read. Some quotes
(referring to some AI characters) "The American government has begun releasing a flood of toxin into the net designed to destroy your kind"
"The ship drifted invisibly upon the ocean of the Net, randomly following different data streams for several Earth years."
"System, please scan displayed code set for hacks and virals"
I'd give you more, but I really couldn't get any further through the book.
I have known Steven for over 40 years. I commend him for writing an interesting and clever book. Bravo to you Steve for an enjoyable read.
A very imaginative book and difficult to put down. A good story is told of the possible future of AI.I highly recommend this book.
Whenever I read a new author my expectations are somewhat low. But what I hope to find is a sterling new voice that delivers something unexpected. Something wonderful. Something that takes me away from the drudgery of the world and transports me to a Magic Kingdom. What I usually find, however, is mediocrity.
Well, you can imagine my surprise when I began to turn the pages of Stephen B. Kagan's Augmented Dreams. There I found a clear voice weaving a complex tale of a mysterious future. In this future, not too many years down the road, super-science has brought forth a compelling, and sometimes chilling, illustration of what tomorrow may indeed hold for us.
That being said, I was blown away by the author's grasp of science and nanotechnology. Not since such literary giants as Isaac Asimov, or Arthur C. Clark, or Philip K. Dick, has the reader been so richly rewarded by a future that has every possibility of becoming real.
But hidden within the pages I found something else. I found that rare jewel, that uncommon quality, that elusive treasure, of a prose that is poetic. No small accomplishment, that! Only the best writers can successfully mix form and function, artisan and art.
At times the prose reminded me of the profound beauty one can find in reading a Ray Bradbury story, and my spirit was transported! And at other times, I felt as if Roger Zelazny himself was speaking through the new author, guiding his hand from above, and I was in bliss!
Now, I'm choosing to construct this review in such a way as to not give the reader any real clue as to what the story is about. This, I can assure you, is quite intentionally done. For the Magic Kingdom awaits, and I would hate to spoil the fun!
What more can I say? There is a brand new author on the horizon, and his name is Stephen B. Kagan. And with his very first work, his introductory novel, he has already set himself firmly among the greats. How lucky we are!

Personally, I think this book is a masterpiece. I will read it again periodically and to my grandchildren. Engaging characters, exciting plots in a seamless future that seems likely or perhaps inevitable. The only way to understand our current present is to study deeply about our possible futures, and this book is a gem in the crown of that context.
Stephen Kagan's Augmented Dreams is a fascinating read exploring a future in which Artificial Intelligence have evolved to the point that they are able to symbiotically inhabit all parts of the human body. The mystery and search for a rogue AI who is controlling smaller AI in some of the characters brains through dreams keeps the story interesting and fast paced.
Multiple themes are richly developed. I especially enjoyed the mythological aspects. The characters are real and likable.
The book brings to mind Tolkien and George R.R. Martin as well as 'The Matrix and "Avatar' and yet is uniquely its own.
Technologic advancement is moving at warp speed around the globe. Augmented Dreams offers a rewarding glimpse into a future that may be 'just around the corner'.
As a somewhat reluctant entry into the connected life, "Augmented Dreams" gives this reader some trepidation about the loss of personal choice and privacy. One needs to ask how much an individual is willing to give over to being subject to the kinds of AI described in the very near future as envisioned by the author.
This book started out with a lot of promise, and I appreciated what I took to be the main thesis, but the levels of mental gymnastics I had to do to keep up with the quasi-magical myth-based end of the book diminished the good ideas that had already been communicated.
