THE LIVING AND THE DEAD

The Living And The Dead edition by Todd Travis James Schannep Literature Fiction eBooks

The Living and The Dead is a great collection of stories that keep you interested throughout the entire book. I first became a fan of Todd Travis after reading his novel Creatures of Appetite. That book is amazing and a must read for anyone who likes thriller/suspense novels. After finishing that book I searched for more books by Todd Travis. I am not a huge fan of short stories because it can be hard to tell a good story that doesn't leave you feeling like you are missing something when it ends. The Living and The Dead proved to me that a talented author can tell a good short story. I was reminded of Creepshow and Tales from the Darkside with some of the stories. Which is not a bad thing, I loved those. Todd Travis is a talented author and I cannot wait to read more of his work.

The Living And The Dead edition by Todd Travis James Schannep Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Living and the Dead is a book of short stories, and is how short stories should be written. From the first word to the last the story grabbed my attention and kept me riveted.

The first story is "Redemption story" it's continued later in a most satisfying way. A writer notices something odd going on at a Children's clothing store.

"In Season" a hunt for bigfoot goes wrong, Deliverance meets Harry and the Hendersons.

"A Boy's Totem" was my favorite of all the excellent stories. It was heartbreaking and empowering all at once. An abused wife takes her abused son and runs from her husband, only for them to find more bullies. But he makes a very special friend in the woods behind their house. Super strong entry.

"Night is for Hunting." This one is supernatural, it's just super. A mysterious woman hunting for very bad men.

"Angel at my Shoulder" continues "Redemption Story." I want more of this and there could be more, it was left open for a great end confrontation. Meanwhile I was happy some people go theirs.

And finally "The Living and the Dead." A short novella that reads like a movie, I could picture the action, the characters, it was really good.

It's not often I can honestly say I read a book of short stories without one meh in the batch, but this book would be one of the exceptions. The stories range from good to exceptional. There is a lot of heavy emotional overtones, religious, redemption, but it's so well handled by the author, and ultimately this is a book of really good short stories.
This was a great read, especially the novella "The Living and the Dead". All of the stories were strong, while they weren't all scary - excellently crafted chills that made me a little afraid to turn out all my lights and walk upstairs in my house by myself.

Redemption Center and Angel at My Shoulder make a great pairing, although I definitely wanted to read another in that vein.

In Season was interesting, with some mystery/horror/UL tropes nicely used, and a reminder that you should always call when you get to your destination - just in case...

Night is for Hunting was good, and a nice twist on the usual vigilante stories.

A Boy's Totem had a little bit creepier note to the end, that made me wonder just how often the narrator had put his friend to work.

The Living and the Dead, the novella, was very well done, and allowed us to share the narrator's dawning realization and horror. More below the spoiler line!

SPOILERS BELOW.

The novella has an excellent use of the dream sequence, with all of the symbology and building tension and horror , where you see where the author went and can look back to see all the clues that now suddenly make sense. The sense of dawning horrified realization is good, and the end cut off at precisely the creepiest moment possible.
I'm truly impressed with the writings of Author Todd Travis. These stories are emotional, and very powerful. Each story is compelling and definitely has dark overtones. The first story, "Redemption Center," deals with an older man who owns a children's clothing store which has not been open for very long, and does not have a lot of business. The owner, Jimmy, and his weak minded assistant, Flu, look outside to see an armored truck back up to the front of the store. This is not unusual, as it arrives two to three times a week. What's unusual is the man standing across the street, wondering why an armored truck would have cause to stop at this store so frequently. He's very curious...and you know, how curiosity kills the cat? The second story, "In Season" takes place in the infrequently visited desolate areas of Alaska. Gwen and her two friends are doing some exploring, just being flown in by a couple of guys in a small plane; they are staying at their cabin in the woods. Just beware, it's very dark in and around this cabin when the generator fails. I think I had a nightmare last night about this story. The third story, "A Boy's Totem" is about a young boy, Bradley, who witnessed his drunken dad frequently beat his mom, who soon included him in the beatings. Mom and Bradley escape to a different state, but it's hard for Bradley to adjust to the new school and is often bullied. But, one day, while in the woods, he come across another boy and they become friends. Just remember, GOOD friends look after each other as you will discover how Elijah takes care of Bradley. The fourth story, "Night Is For Hunting" is the story of Tamra who is a huntress, and you might say, she always gets her man ... walking the midnight streets of NYC. The fifth story, "Angel At My Shoulder" is about Brent, a child kidnapper, who gets terrified by a little blond girl. This story links back to "Redemption Center." And the last short story is "The Living and The Dead," where Dr. Caleb Conroy is a scientist working in nanotechnology which is still controlled and monitored by the Feds. Caleb's scientific project is to disprove the existence of God. These stories are very well written and exhibit some extremes of radical groups and their different religious beliefs. It makes one stop and think about their own beliefs and if there really is a heaven, along with a promised hell. Read these stories, you'll be well entertained.
